Our Future Growth Plans

Future development plans for the Institute

The Uganda Cancer Institute was established in 1967 as a cancer research and treatment centre just five years after independence in collaboration with National Cancer Institute of USA and Makerere University.
Its main research focus was the role of pathogens such as viruses in the causation of cancers; adopt new cancer therapy and preventive strategies, provide country wide cancer consultation services and oncology training, priotization of cancer prevention and control with emphasis on immunization and early detection.

The Institute has embarked on creating cancer awareness, screening and treating among the general population.
As it heads towards its greatness, the Institute has embarked on construction of a centre clinic in Mayuge District. The Clinic will serve as a cancer treatment centre for Eastern Uganda and neighbouring areas including Western Kenya. It will also further as a model whose success will lead to creation of other satellite centers in different parts of the country. For example regional clinics will be set up in Mbarara and Arua districts.

The Institute has plans of increasing the volume of cancer research through collaborations with Institutes like Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, Uganda Program on cancers and infectious diseases and Uganda Child Cancer Foundation among others.
This move will enable the Institute to further its research agenda since it was set up as a research entity.

The Institute has plans of increasing training both for staff and people involved in cancer activities.
To add on its capacity building programs, the Institute has embarked on construction of a six level cancer ward which will house in-patients and other services while construction of an Outpatient and Research building is underway with its ground being broken in 2011.
