Inauguration of the New Uganda Cancer Institute Board of Directors.

The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) is pleased to announce the official inauguration of its newly appointed Board of Directors, held , June 17, 2025, at the Ministry of Health Boardroom in Kampala.
HON RUTH JANE ACENG.
The ceremony was officiated by the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, and attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health, UCI leadership, and key stakeholders from across the health sector. The new Board members were formally sworn into office by a Her worship Prossy Katushabe, Registrar of the High Court.
The newly inaugurated Board will play a critical role in steering the strategic direction of the Uganda Cancer Institute, reinforcing governance structures, and enhancing its mandate in cancer research, prevention, treatment, and care.

The Uganda Cancer Institute proudly welcomes the following individuals to the Board of Directors:
Prof. Damalie Nakanjako – Chairperson Prof. Isaac Kajja – Member Dr. Charles Olaro– Member Dr. Lawrence Otim – Member Ms. Mary Philomena Akello – Member Mr. Sabbiiti Baguma – Member Dr. Rosemary Byanyima – Member Dr. Jackson Orem – Secretary to the Board
Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, emphasized the importance of strong leadership in advancing the work of the Institute:
“The Uganda Cancer Institute plays a vital role in our health system—not only as a treatment facility but as a national leader in oncology research and training. The appointment of this new Board comes at a pivotal time. I am confident that their collective expertise and commitment will drive the Institute forward in providing high-quality, accessible cancer services to all Ugandans.“Dr. Aceng further congratulated the new members and issued a strong call to action:
“Congratulations to the Chairperson and all Board members. Your appointment represents a significant step forward. The Institute serves as the primary center for cancer diagnosis and treatment in Uganda and is a regional hub of excellence. I urge you to serve with compassion and diligence. Ugandans deserve a place of empathy, hope, and quality care. Work closely with management to strengthen operations, communicate progress to the public, and uphold UCI’s status as a center of excellence in the East African region.”
Commenting on the occasion, UCI Executive Director and Board Secretary, Dr. Jackson Orem, remarked:
“We are honored to welcome this distinguished team of professionals. Their expertise will be instrumental in shaping the future of cancer care in Uganda. As we face an increasing cancer burden, effective governance and strategic leadership are more important than ever.”
Her Worship Prossy Katushabe, underscored the significance of the oath-taking ceremony, which formalized the Board’s commitment to upholding their responsibilities with integrity and accountability.
