Press Statement Official Launch of World Cancer Day Activities 31st January 2025, Bwizibwera Health Center IV, Mbarara District
Today, 31st January 2025, the official launch of World Cancer Day activities took place at Bwizibwera Health Center IV in Mbarara District. The event was graced by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Mbarara District, alongside key health officials, community leaders, and health workers, marking the beginning of a series of cancer awareness and screening activities leading up to World Cancer Day on 4th February 2025.
The launch was highlighted by the delivery of impactful cancer awareness messages and the commencement of free cancer screening services offered by the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) in collaboration with various partners in non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
In his opening remarks, the Deputy RDC of Mbarara District emphasized the importance of early cancer detection and the need for collective action in the fight against cancer. He noted the significance of making cancer screening and awareness services accessible to all communities, especially those in rural areas such as Bwizibwera, where many individuals may not have easy access to specialized cancer care.
The District Police Commander (DPC) of Mbarara also addressed the gathering, highlighting the role of law enforcement and community engagement in promoting health education and reducing the stigma surrounding cancer. She reiterated the commitment of the district to work with all sectors of society in preventing and managing cancer.
The in-charge of Bwizibwera Health Center IV provided a comprehensive overview of the health center’s role in cancer care, stressing the importance of partnerships in improving healthcare access for the community.
Dr. James Kafeero, a leading health expert, delivered a compelling cancer awareness message, focusing on the common types of cancer in Uganda, the importance of early detection, and the need for lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of cancer. He encouraged the community to take advantage of the screening services being offered and to continue educating others about the importance of regular check-ups.
As part of the launch, cancer screenings were conducted at the health center, with medical teams from UCI and partner organizations offering free services to members of the community. The screenings are part of a series of awareness and health education activities that will continue through to World Cancer Day on 4th February 2025.
This initiative is a demonstration of the UCI’s commitment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, to improving access to cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment services across Uganda, particularly in regions such as Western Uganda, where cancer incidence is increasing.
The Mbarara region, with over 1,400 new cancer cases reported in 2024, has witnessed a rise in the prevalence of prostate cancer, stomach cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer. The Ministry of Health continues to work closely with local leaders, healthcare workers, and community stakeholders to ensure that all citizens have access to essential cancer care services.
The launch of the World Cancer Day activities is part of ongoing efforts to promote cancer awareness and encourage early screening, which are key to reducing cancer mortality in Uganda.
We encourage all members of the public to visit health centers, get screened, and continue to raise awareness within their communities about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options.
Together, we can fight cancer and save lives.
