The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has had a tremendous local and global impact on the understanding of cancer and its management since its founding in 1967. Some of the outstanding contributions to cancer research and care by UCI include the first description of Burkitt Lymphoma and Kaposi Sarcoma, the first use of combination chemotherapy to treat pediatric malignancies, and the first use of medical therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.
At UCI we are commitment to undertake fundamental research of the highest quality and impact, and to remain a premier cancer research site in Africa and the world at large. We aspire to increase research activities on cancer in Uganda and in Africa through:
1) Building a critical mass of local research scientists and research managers in the field of cancer.
2) Building systems and infrastructure to ensure that research participants are protected, data produced is of the highest quality, and we leverage resources to minimize costs.
3) Pursuing and maintaining both local and international strategic alliances and collaborations which enhance opportunities to conduct research and build capacity.
