Gulu, Uganda— The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), in collaboration with international partners, is conducting a Uro-Oncology Surgical Camp at the Uganda Cancer Institute – Gulu Regional Cancer Centre from 3rd to 7th November 2025. The camp aims to deliver specialized surgical care for patients with urological cancers and strengthen local capacity through hands-on skills transfer and mentorship.
The camp is being led by Dr. Henry Dabanja, Consultant Urologist and Oncologist at UCI, supported by a team of world-renowned Uro-Oncologists from the United States, including:
Dr. Scott Eggener, Lead Surgeon from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
Dr. Moses Kevin, Uro-Oncologist from Vanderbilt University
Dr. Michael Large Christopher, from Indiana Hospital, USA
These experts are working alongside UCI surgeons and regional medical teams to perform complex procedures for patients with prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, while sharing advanced surgical techniques and clinical knowledge.
Speaking about the ongoing initiative, Dr. Henry Dabanja, the camp lead, emphasized the significance of such collaborations.
“This camp is an important milestone in our efforts to decentralize specialized cancer care. Beyond the life-saving surgeries we are performing, we are empowering regional teams with the knowledge and expertise to continue managing these complex cases confidently,” Dr. Dabanja said.
Dr. Geriga Fadhil, Director of Uganda Cancer Institute–Gulu, commended the partnership and noted the life-changing impact of the camp on patients in Northern Uganda.
“Many of our patients in this region face challenges accessing highly specialized surgical care. Hosting this camp here in Gulu brings advanced treatment closer to their communities and demonstrates the commitment of UCI to equitable cancer care across the country,” Dr. Geriga said. He added that the Gulu Regional Cancer Centre is steadily growing into a major hub for oncology services, serving not only Northern Uganda but also neighboring regions and countries.
Dr. Jackson Orem, Executive Director of the Uganda Cancer Institute, lauded the initiative as a vital component of UCI’s vision to take comprehensive cancer care closer to the people.
“This partnership reinforces our commitment to regional outreach and knowledge exchange. We deeply appreciate our international collaborators for walking with us in strengthening Uganda’s oncology capacity,” Dr. Orem stated.
The week-long surgical camp is expected to benefit over 50 of patients and will include procedures, diagnostic evaluations, and training sessions for local health professionals. The initiative reflects UCI’s ongoing strategy to expand access to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research services nationwide.
